If you have spent this year driving the sunset-facing block of Coast Highway 101, the stretch with the surf shops and the ocean glinting between buildings, waiting to see where all six of the new restaurants everyone keeps mentioning actually are, you have been looking in the wrong place. Almost none of them are there. They are a half mile north on Leucadia Boulevard, two blocks inland on 2nd Street, and out along El Camino Real in a shopping center anchored by a Walmart Supercenter. The postcard block already has its restaurants. The new ones went where the parking was easy and the rent made sense.
That is not a small detail. It changes where a resident should actually be driving for a Tuesday dinner, and it explains something about this town that the six-restaurants-in-one-year headline misses entirely.
The North End Picked Up an After-School Loop
Eighteen months ago, the north end of Leucadia Boulevard was not a destination for much of anything. That changed with two openings in late 2025. Chick & Hawk landed at 145 Leucadia Boulevard, a fried chicken concept from skateboarder Tony Hawk and Michelin-recognized chef Andrew Bachelier, built around a skate-park-inspired patio that has turned into a regular meetup for parents running errands on that side of town after school lets out. A few blocks south, Rosemarie's Buns & Brews opened at 608 South Coast Highway 101. Owner Nick Balsamo built the concept around Wagyu sliders with onion confit and Kewpie mayo, starting as a food truck outside Harland Brewing before opening locations in Mission Beach and Ocean Beach. San Diego Magazine named Rosemarie's the best burger in San Diego in 2024, and Balsamo picked Encinitas, his third location in three years, as the permanent flagship.
By this fall, that pocket gets a third anchor. Encinitas Brewing Company is moving into the former Islands Restaurant space at 1588 Leucadia Boulevard, inside the Plaza at Encinitas Ranch shopping center next to REI, sharing a lot with a Walmart Supercenter and a Starbucks. Co-owners Brian McBride, who previously founded Priority Public House in Leucadia, and Ryan Van Biene, a co-founder of Austin's Pinthouse Brewing who has lived in Encinitas for more than a decade, told the city's planning commission in March that the center is quiet but works for what they are trying to build. The commission approved the project unanimously. Construction runs roughly five months, and the team has been targeting a September opening, though as of this writing that date is still described as flexible pending final state licensing.
Downtown Got an Evening It Didn't Have
Coffee Dose was already an Encinitas fixture known for rotating specialty drinks and hard-to-find beans. This year the shop moved into a larger space at 687 2nd Street, roughly doubling its footprint to about 1,100 square feet. The bigger kitchen means the café now serves small plates and tapas alongside coffee, and pours beer and wine into the evening. Owner Jon Runion did not open a second location somewhere else. He went deeper into the block he was already on, and that block picked up a use it never had after 5 p.m.
El Camino Real Becomes a Real Weeknight Option
The inland corridor got the most crowded new lineup of anywhere in town. Pastaria Vivi opened in April 2026 at 119 North El Camino Real in the Encinitas Village Shopping Center. Chefs Brandon Jennings and William Treff built it as four businesses under one roof: a specialty Italian retail shop, a daily handmade pasta counter with more than 75 rotating pasta-and-sauce combinations, a casual sit-down dining room, and a monthly pasta subscription box. Before signing the lease, they tested the concept at the Cardiff Farmers Market and still keep that tent running on market days.
Downtown proper picked up its own new anchor when Isola Pizza Bar opened April 30, 2026 at 569 South Coast Highway 101, the former Death By Tequila space. It is chef and owner Massimo Tenino's third San Diego location after Little Italy and La Jolla, bringing Neapolitan wood-fired pizza built around techniques from his native Liguria and Piedmont.
Further out on El Camino Real, The Stand had been aiming to open its third San Diego County location, joining outposts in Carmel Mountain Ranch and Mission Valley, at 267 El Camino Real, Suite A, with a target of the first week of August 2026. For families west of the freeway who used to drive toward the coast for a quick dinner out, that shortens the trip considerably once the doors are open.

Blank Slate deserves its own note because it does not fit the pattern of the rest. Aron and Pam Schwartz, who built and ran Ranch 45 in Solana Beach before going mobile with their catering venture, turned the former Chiko space at 101 North Coast Highway 101 into a private event venue with a 12-seat chef's counter, indoor seating for 50, and a patio that holds 75. On nights without private bookings they run community dinners, three courses for $55 a person, open to anyone who shows up.
The Construction Cones Are Part of This Story
Here is the piece that gets left out of most of the roundups covering this year. The stretch of North Coast Highway 101 between Jupiter Street and La Costa Avenue, the actual postcard block, has been under active construction since March 2024 as part of the Leucadia Streetscape and drainage project. The city's own project page now targets late fall 2026 for completion, after two separate council-approved extensions this spring pushed the timeline past the original summer 2026 estimate. That means lane shifts, dust, and equipment on that block have been a near-constant condition for more than two years running.
It is not a coincidence that the highest-profile new arrivals landed somewhere else. A parking study submitted for the Encinitas Brewing Company site found the Plaza at Encinitas Ranch lot running at 44 percent of capacity during peak hours, with room to grow to 69 percent even if every vacant space in the center filled up. That is the kind of headroom you cannot find on a construction-clogged block where curbside parking gets temporarily restricted during lane shifts. Quiet, in this case, was not a problem the new tenants had to work around. It was the reason the real estate was available at all.
What This Actually Changes for a Tuesday Night
None of this displaces the town's existing rhythms, and Fox Point Brewing, Encinitas's other brewery since 2024, is not going anywhere. What has changed is that a resident planning an evening out no longer defaults to the same three blocks of Coast Highway 101 out of habit. The after-school stop is now on Leucadia Boulevard. The dinner-and-drinks option that used to mean crossing the tracks is now on 2nd Street. The quick weeknight meal that used to mean driving toward the water is starting to work just as well on El Camino Real. Six openings, sure, but the more useful way to read this year is that three new pockets of town started doing work the coastal strip used to handle alone, and every one of them chose a spot the postcard version of Encinitas would have overlooked.
Reading a neighborhood this closely, watching which blocks are absorbing new investment and why, is the same instinct that goes into pricing and marketing a home well in this market. The Vincent Morris Team pays attention to these shifts because they tend to say something true about a place long before a listing sheet does.
